Dive with
the Legends in Cozumel. In this Caribbean paradise the International
Legends of Diving will feature Bob Meistrell and James Stewart,
two west
coast dive pioneers, April 12-19, 2010. The 2010 trip is $300 less than
the epic 2009 event in the Bahamas. It is also all-inclusive. And with
good deals on airline tickets now is the best time to take the plunge.
Accommodations for the Sixth ILD series has been set for the Wyndham
Cozumel Resort & Spa, an exclusive resort on the
Sand
Dollar Sports
Cozumel
island off the Yucatan coast of Mexico. An impressive set of packages is
available for the diver and non-diver. An included dive package will be
provided by Sand Dollar Sports.
Bob Meistrell, along with his twin brother Bill (deceased), founded Dive
N’ Surf in 1957, one of the first dive shops to open in California. The
Meistrells
NAUI is celebrating its
rich history with a 50th anniversary bonanza at the Legends of Diving
festival. Plenty of activities are planned for
the event including specials for the first 50 registrants. Jeff Rice

were known
for experimenting with various materials and methods to delay the onset
of hypothermia during free dives and while surfing. The Meistrells,
working with other diving legends solved the problem with the
introduction of a “wetsuit”. From there they went on to develop neoprene
wet suits for surfers, and to serve the growing interest in recreational
diving which led to the formation of Body Glove, known around the world
as the leader in watersports clothing and wet suits.
James Stewart's love for the ocean began in 1941 when he put on a
scuba mask
and took his first free dive into the cold Pacific Ocean. In 1952
Stewart began his long and productive association with Scripps
Institution of Oceanography. Conrad (Connie) Limbaugh and Dr. Andreas
(Andy)
Rechnitzer
developed the diving instructor program at Scripps. Limbaugh recruited
Stewart as a volunteer in the Scripps program where he assisted in
research and diver training. The Scripps dive training program was
developed just to train scientific divers in the proper use of scuba
gear. It was this dive training program that paved the way for many
sport and scientific diver training courses to be started around the
world.
On hand will be Dan Orr, President and CEO of Divers Alert Network (DAN)
who will serve as the master of ceremonies for the 2010 ILD Award
Ceremony. DAN is a proud sponsor
Dan
Orr, DAN, will
serve as MOC
of the
International Legends of Diving. All divers and those interested are
invited to attend this historic event honoring two of scuba diving’s
great legends.
Nick Icorn, "The Keeper of the Flame", Joe Liburdi, with 58 years of
diving experience, along with two legends of diving in Mexico, Sergio
Vizcaino and
Alec Peirce
Manuel Lazcano, have also been asked to join the list of
legends in Cozumel. Lazcano has led underwater photography dive
expeditions around the world. Sergio Vizcaino is co-founder of
the Federation Mexican Activities Sub-aquatic.
Alec
Peirce of Scuba 2000 returns to the Legends event with memorabilia and
his presentation on Sea Hunt. Lloyd Bridges as Mike Nelson on Sea Hunt
sparked a great interest in SCUBA diving in the early 60s.
A registration deposit of $200 for a single diver and $300 for double
occupancy is required to secure your position at

Sand
Dollar Sports was founded in 1984 by Suzanne Fernandez. Our specialty at
that time was snorkeling tours. She successfully ran these operations
with her husband for the next 7 years. In 1991 Sand Dollar Sports
brought John Flynn on board to expand operation and create new windows
of opportunity. During the next 8 years Sand Dollar Sports expanded its
tour offerings to all the major cruise lines more than tripling its
capacities while maintaining a spotless safety record. In 1996 the
opportunity arose to begin working with the Reef Club Cozumel as their
dive operators.
We started with the Reef Club and its original 260 rooms on December
17th 1997. From that day forward there was no looking back. We have
grown and reinvested and continued to look forward as the hotel and its
facilities have grown. In 2007 the hotel now known as the Wyndham boasts
402 rooms and a solid 4 star rating. The facilities now include 'Sabor'
the only all inclusive adult only hotel in Cozumel.
Presently Sand Dollar Sports boasts a fleet of 16 vessels. 130 employees
and 6 locations. We provide service on average to 250 guests daily or
over 90,000 guests annually. This makes us the largest and safest dive
operator on the island. We carry the most comprehensive insurance
coverage available. Our clients include Crystal Cruise Lines, Cunard
Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Lines and Azamar to name a few of the high
end ships and customers that we work with. Carnival Cruise Lines, Royal
Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Holland America and Princess Cruise
lines are all long standing customers and would be more than willing to
vouch for our record of customer service and safety.

Free Shore Diving
Sand Dollar Sports
is offering shore diving free of charge at their location in Sunset Beach and in Chankanaab Park.
Weights and
tanks will be provided free of charge
Guests are
responsible for transportation costs
Chankanaab
Park has an entrance fee and requires a guide since it is in the marine park
(Guide is $10 for every 4 divers)
There is no
shore diving on the southern side of the island. The reef is too far out,
the currents are strong and there is a lot of boat traffic.
