Nick Rolle
Owner of Sunn Odyssey Divers, LTD

The owner of Sunn Odyssey Divers; Nick Rolle, was in defiance of his mother; when he took up scuba diving in 1974 under the instruction of David Andrews ex-Navy Seal. Although his father was a Sea Captain; his mother was a non-swimmer; therefore, her belief was stay away from the water because you will drown!

After secretly completing his OW certification Nick began working with his instructor in Nassau at the Buena Vista Hotel. At that time they did more snorkel trips than scuba and his longing for more took him to Freeport, Grand Bahama. There he began his career as a Dive Guide in late 1974 with The Deep Freaks at the Victoria Inn. In early

1975 he moved on to Scubahamas continuing to lead dives and enjoy the underwater world with a passion.

Later that year the shop closed and Nick moved on to UNEXSO where he quickly fit in. Nick recalls; back then everybody had to do a little of everything to keep things going. You may have had to dive in the morning, work the desk in the afternoon and then make sure the pool was clean before closing. This was only the beginning of something big to come in his life; owning his own dive shop.

In 1977 Nick got a call from a good friend of his asking if he would like to start a dive operation on Walker's Cay. He jumped at the chance to officially open a dive operation from the start. He was again thrown into the position of wearing many hats on most days from leading dive trips to teaching scuba courses as well as everything in between. Walker's Cay dive was still in operation until a few years ago.

UNEXSO had a need for a Bahamian Divemaster and in 1979 he found himself back in Freeport where he worked as a Divemaster. After spending some time there and also as usual; become someone that could be depended on to lead dives, teach or even clean the pool.

Nick got a call from Frazier Nivens; a PADI Course Director working in Rum Cay, Bahamas and asked Nick to join him down there. This was 1980 and he worked there as a Divemaster until he started his own operation; Sunn Odyssey Divers in 1982. His operation has expanded and now has a very successful retail shop as well as being the first PADI 5 Star IDC facility on Grand Bahama Island. His shop also held the first PADI IDC in Freeport.

For many summers, Nick has given his time to the kids in the YMCA summer camp program by offering the Bubble Maker program to the many children who would otherwise never get an opportunity to learn about and use scuba gear. Who knows, there may be a future Dive Shop owner taking one of these summer classes!
